Bamboo Mañalac says being a male coach in ‘The Voice Kids’ is tough

“Mahirap talaga, it’s a lot harder this time,” pahayag ni Bamboo. “Lalo na sa Blind Audition kasi we’re looking for perfection. We need someone who can hit the high notes, with voice clarity and good diction. So you have to carefully listen.”

“There were kids na akala ko would be around 11 or 12, but after turning around, during the interview, I’d learn na they’re only about seven or eight. Kasi very powerful na agad yung voice nila at their young age. Nakakabilib!”

“All of the kids can sing, talent-wise that’s no question. But the question there is is, hindi pa sila [voice] buo, hindi pa hinog or luto. Children have raw talents. And that’s where the Coaches comes in. We’re the ones who can develop and harness them into their fullest potentials.”

“So it’s up to me to guide them, to tell them na, ‘medyo di ka bagay sa ganitong genre, you have to try this one, ganyan. I’ve done that to some of the artists, so hopefully, I can do the same.”

Anong pinakamahirap na na-encounter mo sa ‘The Voice Kids’ this season?

“With the two ladies [Lea Salonga and Sarah Geronimo] up against me, I admit it’s harder for me to convince the kids to join my Team Kawayan or choose me as their Coach. I think there’s some aspect talaga na…some children talaga feel a lot closer to the ladies. Their inclination will always be with the girls, especially with girl contestants who also try to pick girls.”

“The way I present myself is different, like, I can tell them I recorded this and that, but that doesn’t go to their head sometimes, you know. So I present myself as a person, na it’s going to be fun, it’s gonna be dynamic. So at some level, yes it helps. But that makes it challenging and fun at the same time.”
