Philippine basketball icon Caloy Loyzaga passes away at 85

caloy loyzaga1Filipino basketball legend Carlos ‘Caloy’ Loyzaga passed away on Wednesday (January 27) due to cardiac arrest at around 7 a.m. at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center. Arguably the greatest Filipino to ever play the game of basketball, Caloy was touted as “The Big Difference” because of his contribution to Philippine Basketball. He led the Philippine basketball team with 4 Asian Games gold contributions, FIBA Asian Championships both in 1960 and 1963, and he also competed in the summer Olympics of 1952 and 1956 respectively.

The 6’3” tall Loyzaga had been in failing health after suffering from a stroke. In 2013, Loyzaga accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippine Sportswriters Association.

He retired in 1964 at that time playing point-center. He also later tried coaching the national squad, The Dirty Dozen, to regain the ABC title in 1967. He then became a councilor in Manila, got a job at the  loyzaga familyairport and coached in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) for Tanduay. He and his family emigrated to Australia, but returned to the country in 2013.

He has 4 children namely: Chito and Joey who followed in his footsteps and actresses Teresa and Bing. Young actor Diego Loyzaga is his grandson.

His remains lies at the Arlington Memorial Chapel and will be open to the public for viewing.
