Despite his thriving career in showbiz, Miggs is determined to finish his studies
The wonder child Miggs Cuaderno is back in the 13th edition of Cinemalaya.
Miggs, a GMA contract artist, is an acclaimed child actor who won his first best supporting actor trophy in Derick Cabrido’s “Children’s Show” in 2014.
He also bagged his first international acting award in Cheries-Cherie International Film Festival in France for his portrayal of the protagonist’s nephew in Eduardo Roy, Jr.’s “Quick Change”, an entry to the 2013 Cinemalaya. He was also adjudged best child performer in the 2015 Famas awards for his powerful performance as an autistic boy in Louie Ignacio’s “Asintado.”
In Perry Escano’s “Ang Guro Kong Hindi Marunong Magbasa,” his latest Cinemalaya movie, he essays the role of a child warrior in war-torn Mindanao.
“Ako po si Basil. Isa po siyang batang rebelde. Pinatay po ng mga militar ang mga parents niya. Kinupkop po siya ng mga rebelde at tinuruang humawak ng baril para pumatay hanggang isang araw, nakatagpo po niya si Aquil (Alfred Vargas), at sa engkuwentro, naagaw po niya iyong baril sa akin at tinamaan po ako sa paa. Pero, kinupkop po niya ako at naging kaibigan niya at naging mabait po iyong karakter ko sa kanya,” he told PSR.
For Miggs, it’s also his first time to carry a gun.
“Totoong baril po siya, pumuputok pong talaga. Noong una nga po, ninerbiyos ako kasi first time ko pong humawak ng baril na ganoon po kalaki,” he recounted.
Assuming the persona of a child warrior, the child actor is aware of the seriousness of his role and its possible repercussions.
“Iyon naman pong mga child warriors, meron naman po talagang ganoon sa Mindanao. Siyempre, kaya po sila naging rebelde dahil nagagalit po sila dahil corrupt po iyong namamahala sa kanila at kinukurakot po ang pondo na dapat sana ay laan sa kanilang pag-aaral,” he said. “Sa akin naman po, hindi lang po ito tungkol sa mga rebelde kundi tungkol po sa edukasyon na hindi ko ginawa para tularan o maging bad image po dahil nakapokus pa rin po siya sa pag-aaral at sa edukasyon po,” he added.
Pitted against fellow award winners like Marc Justine Alvarez, (“Transit,”), Micko B. Laurente (“Pitong Kabang Palay”) and Bon Andrew Lentejas (“Hamog”), Miggs said that there is nary a competition among them.
“Hindi po namin iniisip ang competition. Hindi po kami nagpapagalingan dahil nagsusuportahan po kami at saka po, magkakaibigan po talaga kami,” he quipped.
Despite his thriving career in showbiz, Miggs is determined to finish his studies.
“Nasa home study program po ako. First year high school na po ako,” he said. “Kapag wala pong taping o shooting, may tutor naman pong pumupunta sa bahay at doon kami nag-aaral,” he added.
On television, Miggs was last seen in the sitcom “Tsuperhero” on GMA 7.
