23rd French Film Festival unreels in select Ayala Cinemas

Since 1995, the French Embassy Manila has been bringing an annual showcase of French films, giving Filipino moviegoers a chance to see something other than the usual Hollywood fare.

This year’s edition will be screened at Greenbelt 3 Cinemas in Makati, Bonifacio High Street Cinemas in Taguig and UP Town Center in Quezon City from June 6-12.

This year’s lineup includes Daniele Thompson’s Cezanne et Moi, Etienne Comar’s Django, Tarek Boudali’s Épouse-moi mon pote (Marry Me, Dude), Jean-François Laguionie’s Louise en Hiver (Louise by the Shore) , Arnaud des Pallières’ Orpheline (Orphan), Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper, Valérie Müller and Angelin Preljocaj’s Polina, danser sa vie (Polina), Cédric Kahn’s La Prière (The Prayer), Guillaume Canet’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, David Moreau’s Seuls (Alone), Franck Gastambide’s Taxi 5, Stéphane Brizé’s Une Vie (A Woman’s Life), Bertrand Tavernier’s Voyage à travers le cinéma français (A Journey through French Cinema) and Jalil Lespert’s Yves Saint Laurent.

To celebrate the centenary of one of the most influential directors of all time, Institut Français has curated a retrospective of masterpieces by the iconic director, Jean-Pierre Melville — the master of French film noir.

His critically acclaimed movies like 24 heures dans la vie d’un clown (24 Hours in the Life of a Clown), 1946; Le silence de la mer, 1948; Bob le Flambeur, 1956; Léon Morin Prêtre (Léon Morin, Priest), 1961; Le Doulos (Doulos: The Finger Man), 1961; L’Armée des ombres (Army of Shadow), 1969; and Le cercle rouge (The Red Circle), 1970 will be also be shown.

As a tribute to Philippine cinema, critically acclaimed and award winning films such as Raymond Red’s Anino (Shadows), 2000 and Himpapawid (Manila Skies), 2009 and Zig Dulay’s Bagahe (The Baggage), 2017 will form part of the Independence day celebration.

Aside from Metro Manila, the 23rd French Film Festival will have its provincial run in Abreeza Mall in Davao City from June 21-22 and Ayala Center, Cebu from June 25-27.

The 23rd French Film Festival will open on June 8, 2018 with the invitational red carpet screening of the fifth installment of the action-packed blockbuster, Taxi.
