LGBT-centric movies celebrate Pride Month in Cinelokal’s PelikuLaya
A showcase of four acclaimed LGBT themed films will mark the celebration of Pride Month this June as FDCP’s Cine Lokal celebrates diversity and pride in “PelikulaLaya: An LGBT Film Festival” in partnership with different LGBTQIA+ organizations.
The lineup includes the Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013 drama film “Lihis” directed by Joel Lamangan starring Jake Cuenca, Lovi Poe, Joem Bascon, Isabelle Daza and Gloria Diaz.
Set in the tumultuous ‘70s, the film follows the story of two young NPA warriors who find themselves embroiled in a web of frustration and despair but also their love for each other.
This will be followed by the Cinemaone Originals 2017 comedy film “Si Chedeng at si Apple,” Philippines’ entry to the 20th Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy.
Directed by Rae Red and Fatrick Tabada, the movie stars veteran and award-winning actresses Elizabeth Oropesa and Gloria Diaz.
The movie is about the story of a 60-year old Chedeng who decides to comes out during her husband’s wake while her best friend, Apple beheads her live-in partner in a fit of rage. Bound by friendship, the two elderly women, together with the severed head placed inside a Louis Vuitton bag, set off an adventure of a lifetime to find Chedeng’s ex-girlfriend.
Also in the roster is Cinemalaya Film Festival 2014’s best film, “Kasal” directed by Joselito Altarejos. Starring Arnold Reyes and Oliver Aquino, the movie tackles the story of gay couple who resolve to stay together as their relationship is put to a test when they attend a wedding.
Completing the list of June films is the documentary “Outrun” directed by S. Leo Chiang and Johnny Symons. The documentary is a peek into the lives of LGBT people and the challenges they face as they transition into the mainstream and fight for dignity, legitimacy and acceptance across the globe.
These empowering LGBT films will be screened in FDCP’s Cine Lokal from June 22 to June 28 in SM Manila, SM Sta. Mesa, SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM North Edsa, SM Fairview, SM Southmall and SM Bacoor.
