Award-winning actress Therese Malvar debuts in Cinemalaya via “Baconaua”
Award-winning actress Therese Malvar makes her debut in Cinemalaya this year.
She is in the cast of “Baconaua,” Joseph Israel Laban’s (Nuwebe, The Sisters) entry to the 2017 Cinemalaya.
“Excited po ako rito sa “Baconaua” dahil first time ko pong mag-Cinemalaya. Nagkaroon na po ako ng opening film sa Cinemalaya na “123” pero hindi po siya part ng competition, so ito po talaga ang una kong film sa Cinemalaya,” she said.
After standing out in her previous films, she shows another acting mettle in her latest starrer.
“Ako po si Dian. Tatlong po kaming magkakapatid. Panganay po si Ate Elora (Espano). Bunso po namin si JM Salvado. Kakaiba po iyong role ko rito dahil mai-involve kami ng Ate ko sa isang lalake na pinag-aagawan po namin. Hinahanap din po namin ang tatay namin na matagal na pong nawawala tapos magde-decide po kami na ilibing siya para makakuha kami ng pension sa Patrol,” she shared.
“Baconaua po ang title kasi may reference po siya sa sea serpent. Para po siyang dragon sa Pinoy myth. Siya po iyong pinapaniwalaang cause po ng eclipse. Ayon po kasi sa lumang paniniwala ng mga taga Marinduque, meron daw pong sea creature na kumukuha ng mga tao kaya po may mga nawawala sa dagat. Tagaroon po ang director namin at siya pong nagsabi na posible nga pong merong ganoon,” she added.
Before accepting her role as Dian, Teri did her homework.
“Nag-research po ako. Pati po iyong lengguwahe nila pati iyong punto po, pinag-aralan ko. Kakaiba rin po iyong karakter niya kasi sa edad po niya, medyo jinky siya dahil may pagka-sexually active po,” she enthused.
She also shared the hurdles she encountered while doing the movie.
“Nahirapan lang po kami doon po sa mga eksena namin sa dagat, lalo na po iyong nasa bangka kami. Kailangan kasing dapat laging kalmado ang waves at makisama ang panahon at ang dagat habang nagsho-shoot kami, so, sa punto pong iyon, medyo mahirap,” she told PSR.
Known for portraying roles considered mature for her age, Therese is out to prove that she is the best actress of her generation. (She practically nailed it as a young tomboy in “Huling Chacha ni Anita”, a juvenile killer in “Hamog”, a teenage prostitute in “123” and an evil seductress in “Ilawod”).
But according to the young actress, it is not deliberate on her part to choose these types of roles.
“Iyong manager ko po ang namimili ng mga projects ko. Pero sa mga roles ko naman po, pinag-uusapan po namin. I would also choose my roles at pati na si Mommy. Iyon namang mga roles na napupunta po sa akin, hindi talaga siya nakaplano, kasi sumasakto lang siya sa akin. Iyon kasing ibang projects, they see me in it and I love naman po na nako-consider po ako sa mga iyon,” she concluded.
Aside from “Baconaua,” Therese will also be seen in Ralston Jover’s “Hamog,” an entry to the first Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, a weeklong celebration of Pinoy films happening from August 16-22 in theatres nationwide.
“Hamog” is the only local film so far that competed in two International Federation of Film Producers Associations or FIAPF A-list film festivals and won in both.
It bagged the Outstanding Artistic Achievement award for Ralston at the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival, and the Silver St. George Best Actress Award for Teri in the 38th Moscow International Film Festival, making her the country’s youngest A-list film festival actress.
