Derek Ramsay doesn’t mind doing antihero roles

Aug 7, 2017

Kapatid hunk actor Derek Ramsay plays a villain role in Brillante Mendoza’s “Amo,” a 12-part crime miniseries.

The TV series is set against the background of the country’s war on drugs known as “Operation Tokhang” where suspected illegal drug personalities are killed in the guise of vigilantism.

Ramsay said he had no qualms in accepting the role of Rodrigo Macaraeg, a corrupt policeman involved in illegal drug trade.

“Actually, I want to be as versatile as possible. I want to portray not just the boy next door type na pinag-aagawan ng mga babae, gusto ko ring mag-explore ng other roles. Parang mas gusto ko iyong ganito.  Hindi ko hinahangad na ako dapat ang bida sa isang project. I am a team player and I want to be part of a good project,” he said.

According to Derek, this is not the first time that he did an anti-hero hero.

“I did “Janitor” for Cinemalaya before. Corrupt cop din iyong role ko at hindi naging problema sa akin iyong role. Iyong ibang artista, concerned kung mamamatay ba sila o bida ba sila sa movie, ako hindi, as long na it’s a good project,” he averred.

“Amo” is a great project with a great message. I think it’s really ballsy of TV5 to present this and show that there is a major problem in our country when it comes to drugs and corruption,” he pointed out.

It is also Derek’s first time to be directed by master auteur Brillante Mendoza.

“Noong una, nagulat ako kasi wala pala siyang script at rehearsal at isasabak ka na niya sa acting. What I want is binibigyan niya ng liberty iyong artista niya to interpret his role. And with his body of works, sino ba naman ang hindi magiging proud na makatrabaho siya?” he enthused.

Speaking of his love life, the actor is now very vocal about his relationship with non-showbiz girlfriend Joanne Villablanca.

He also revealed that she is the woman he wants to marry.

“I won’t be in this relationship naman if I didn’t think that way because it would be a complete waste of time. Joan and I are enjoying our lives together right now. We’re very committed to one another. Of course, the plan is to end up with that happy ending story. For now, hindi pa namin plinaplano. We want everything out of the way,” he quipped. “If ever it has to happen, it will happen in the next three years, I guess,” he added.

He has also given some thought on retiring soon.

“I don’t see myself lasting in showbiz for more than 3 years now. I admire those who have gotten married and remain in showbiz because there’s so much responsibility and pressure na pagsabayin sila. For me kasi when I get married, I wanna focus on raising my family and I think, I cannot mix these things together because I don’t want to be in a situation where I have a family and can’t have control over my time for them,” he elucidated.

He also signified his interest of working with Angelica Panganiban, his ex.

“I’ve been open for the longest time to work with her. We almost we have a project together kaso nagkaroon ng conflict sa sched. Actually, we are on speaking terms now. Whatever happened between us is now under the bridge and Angelica is a good actress and I would be glad if I’ll be given the opportunity to work with her,” he concluded.
