
Direk Brillante Mendoza brings his indie-ish style to SONA coverage
Known for his internationally acclaimed indie films Serbis, Taklub and Ma’ Rosa, director Brillante Mendoza faced different challenge as he tasked, directed the very first SONA of President Rodrigo Duterte, July 25.
Aside from the historic-tough statements of the President and the instant fashion show, citizens talked the style of Direk Mendoza, brought his indie shots to SONA, trended on twitter.
On the SONA 2016 which was telecasted on all TV networks, many noticed the camera angles and shots that have been used by the director. He used worms eye view, close ups and unconventional shots that have never been seen on the typical SONA coverage.
Some called his style as artsy but for some there should be formality in the shots and angles. Dim lighting and slow transitions were also noticed in the Duterte’s first ever SONA.

Director said on his interview with ABS-CBN, he wanted the public to witness the authenticity of the President, more realistic and natural shots.
But no matter how the SONA-broadcast turned, Direk Brillante Mendoza is still the award-winning director who brought pride to the country and uplifted the Philippine cinema.
