First Muslim Woman To Be Featured In Playboy Magazine

Sep 28, 2016

For the first time in history, a Muslim woman wearing a hijab was being featured in the iconic men’s magazine Playboy.

Playboy magazine is known for its nude, almost-porn photos that capture women’s body that made the magazine became iconic especially for men.

Along with her scarf, Muslim woman Noor Tagouri wore a leather jacket with jeans and sneakers, making her body so cover with clothes but expressed a brave woman, fierce face that tells story.

Noor Tagouri is a 22-year old American journalist. She appeared in the said magazine in its October “Renegades” edition, a series expresses men and women “who risked it all—even their lives—to do what they love.”

She works as a reporter for Newsy, a video news network and the publication describes her as “a badass activist with a passion for demanding change and asking the right questions, accompanied by beauty-ad-campaign looks.”

Tagouri, whose goal is to become the first “hijabi” anchor on commercial US television, said that her struggles as a Muslim woman growing up in the United States have helped her move ahead in her career.

As a journalist, Tagouri said gaining the trust of interviewees is something she’s equipped to do, given her own struggles.

“I know what it’s like to have the narrative of our community be skewed and exploited in the media,” she told Playboy, which did away with nudity earlier this year as it sought to appeal to a wider audience.
“I was like, ‘Hey, I know what it’s like to be misrepresented in the media. I won’t do that to you. I want to tell your story because it’s important and deserves justice.”

Tagouri spoke to Playboy about modesty, the emotional challenges of journalism, prejudice against Muslim-Americans in the current political climate, and breaking glass ceilings.

After the October series of Playboy came out, many netizens reacted on it, telling that it was a brave, inspiring move but some reacted negatively on the way the American journalist justify women.
