It’s More Fun in the Philippines: Bicol celebrates Daragang Magayon Festival; Mt. Mayon Volcano makes it in the list of nominees for World Heritage Sites
This year’s celebration of ‘Daragang Magayon Festival’ becomes more meaningful as the Mayon Volcano Natural Park (MVNP) in Albay province has been included in the list of nominees for World Heritage Sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
This was announced Saturday by Albay Gov. Joey Salceda based on the list released in the UNESCO website. He also announced it before ecstatic Bicolanos during the pageant presentation and coronation night of Daragang Magayon 2015 beauty pageant, April 28.
“Maganda ang Albay dahil nahirang at napasama sa UNESCO World Heritage List dahil sa napakagandang hugis na naging paksa ng mga alamat at sining,” the governor said.
He said they were proud that UNESCO had seriously considered MVNP as a heritage site, given the years of efforts by the local government to ensure that Mount Mayon’s biodiversity remained intact and protected even as it is being promoted as a tourism site.
WORLD HERITAGE SITE
A World Heritage Site will have access to the World Heritage Fund to be used for preservation and promotion, while emergency assistance may also be made available for urgent action to repair damage caused by man-made or natural disasters.
