Kean Cipriano does folk; still finds the challenge of portraying a singer in “Triptiko”
Vocalist and actor Kean Cipriano has two film entries in this year’s Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
He is one of the lead in Kip Oebanda’s “Bar Boys” and in Miguel Franco Michelena’s “Triptiko.”
Both movies were graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board.
“I feel like a legit movie star. Kumbaga, nag-align lang ang universe at nangyari iyong cosmic love kaya may dalawa akong entries,” he enthused.
Triptiko is Michelena’s directorial debut. It consists of three funny, sometimes absurd and sometime terrifying stories.
It is a Pinoy pop culture version of triptych- a set of three associated artistic, literary or musical pieces intended to be appreciated together.
In the episode “Musikerong John,” Kean admitted that he fell in love with his role.
“Sa ‘Musikong John,’ isa akong folk singer. Sobrang in love ako sa girlfriend ko na si Anne played by Kylie (Padilla). Tapos, nagulat na lang ako isang araw, biglang nag-iba na rin ang girlfriend ko. Wala silang pinag-awayan. Walang naging problema. Para lang siyang naging tragic romance,” he shared.
As a musician himself, he says he still finds the challenge of portraying a singer in a movie.
“Folk singer ako rito. Actually, sobrang nanibago ako dahil hindi ko siya genre. Ibang-iba kasi ang folk sa rock. Siyempre, challenge sa akin kung paano ko siya mapu-pull off. Tapos, meron akong tatlong kanta rito. Original songs siya pero hindi ako ang sumulat,” he said.
“I have to sing folk songs pero at the back of my mind, sabi ko, sana legit itong ginagawa ko para naman hindi nakakahiya sa mga nirerespeto kong mga folk singers,” he added.
He admitted though that, at first, he had qualms in doing his role because it’s something out of his comfort zone.
“That’s the good thing about being an actor naman. May mga bagay naman na hindi mo talaga ginagawa in real life, pero ang lahat ng iyon ay nagkakaroon ng katuparan kapag aktor ka,” he pointed out.
When he was just starting, he also dreamed of being a successful folk singer.
“Oo naman, pero mas pinangarap ko kasing maging rapper. Pero sa rock ako nakilala, mainly dahil iyon siguro ang type ko pero ako naman, open pa rin ako sa possibilities to do other genres,” he quipped.
Although there are weird elements in the story, he said the movie has quite an inspiring message.
“Change is a constant thing. It happens everyday. Hindi mo matatantiya kung kailan mababago ang mga bagay-bagay, so dapat na handa ka,” he elucidated.
Speaking of his wife Chynna, he says that he is raring to do a project with her.
“It would be great. Actually, may mga nag-o-offer sa amin before, pero hindi siya nag-materialize. Pero, now that I’m with Cornerstone, everything naman is possible,” he concluded.
The other two stories featured in “Triptiko” are “Swerte” starring Albie Casiño as a young man whose luck turned upside down when he became a witness to a murder and “Hinog” with Kapamilya hunk actor Joseph Marco in the spotlight as a neophyte model stricken with a loathsome disease.
Produced by Michelena Brothers Productions and Barrio’s Pictutes, it also stars Jerald Napoles, Art Acuña, Jay Gonzaga, Pinky Amador and Karl Medina.
