PSR.ph’s contributing writer Ma. Leonila “Leony” Garcia was hailed grand winner during the 2016 Lasallian Scholarum Awards held on October 3 at the Shangri-la Hotel Makati.

Her article, titled Journey of a Lasallian Scholar, bested nine other feature articles from the country’s major newspapers, two of which are her other entries.  The winning story chronicles a student’s journey from ordinary to extraordinary. Perceiving himself to be “typical”, this student made sure to step up once he was given the opportunity to receive a Lasallian education through the Vaugirard Scholarship Program. The story takes a balanced look at how he juggles his studies, extra-curricular activities, family, and serving the University through being an integral part of its community. It also underscores how this promising, young leader learned the value of giving back, as it is a huge part of his Lasallian identity.

Garcia is Business Mirror’s Supplement Editor and Feature Writer. It is the first Lasallian Scholarum Awards for her and for the business newspaper which she represents.  She received a cash prize and a trophy designed and crafted by renowned artist Daniel dela Cruz.

Garcia has been writing extensively on various topics since her school days. She started writing professionally in 1986 with then the No. 1 magazine in the Philippines at that time, MOD Magazine. Prior to her stint at the Business Mirror, she edited various magazines on celebrities, travel and health. She also had writing and editing stints at the Manila Times and a television magazine program Asenso Pinoy at PTV4.

Her current involvements are with the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) as Public Relations Officer, as tourism advocate and as volunteer to some NGOs and charitable projects advancing the cause of young children’s health and education.

The Lasallian Scholarum Awards recognizes outstanding media coverage of Filipino youth and education issues by print, photo, broadcast, and campus journalists. An annual recognition program, it seeks to lead the public in discovering these moving stories, engage them in meaningful discussions, and encourage them to take positive, innovative actions that will help shape a brighter future for the country’s youth and education. This year’s theme is “Challenging Perspectives: Examining youth and education stories through fresh eyes.”
