Taylor Swift wins Album of the Year Award at Grammys

K nown for recognizing eclectic musicians in recent years, the latest Grammy awards have gone to some of the best-sellers — a meeting, deliberate or not, of the industry’s top honors. The most prestigious award, Album of the Year, had an unusually diverse range of nominees including meditative rapper Kendrick Lamar, indie rock sensation Alabama Shakes and late-blooming country singer Chris Stapleton. But the music professionals voted to give the best prize to Taylor Swift’s “1989,” one of the top-selling albums of the past decade. Record of the Year went to “Uptown Funk,” the retro party anthem by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars that spent a near-historic 14 weeks on top of the US Billboard chart. Song of the Year, which recognizes songwriters, went to Ed Sheeran’s romantic “Thinking Out Loud” which broke another record on Spotify.
Taylor Swift said she became the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice. And on her acceptance speech, she delivered a powerful message for other young women and it seemed as if she responded to what fellow singer Kanye West told her, “There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you focus on the work and you don’t let these people sidetrack you…someday, when you get to be where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know that it was you and the people who love you put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
Talks have it that it might be Swift’s way of addressing lyrics that Kanye West recently used referencing her on his latest album, The Life of Pablo. However, on his Twitter account, the rapper denied that he criticized Taylor Swift, rather he claims to have had her blessing to use the lyrics. Swift’s publicist said that Swift ‘cautioned West about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message.’ ‘Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that bitch famous.’”
It will be recalled that West took a field shot at Taylor Swift on his rap song “Famous”: “For all my Southside niggas that know me best/I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous/God damn/ I made that bitch famous.”
