Film director & writer Ida Anita Q. del Mundo said she was mesmerized by the Tboli culture when she visited South Cotabato to cover the Tnalak Festival during one of her assignments as travel writer for STARweek magazine of Philippine Star.
Haunted by her beautiful T’boli experience, Del Mundo said she got inspired to write about the people of South Cotabato and their tradition of t’nalak weaving which landed in the new breed category of 2014 Cinemalaya independent film festival.
Thus, the five-man creative team of Del Mundo from Metro Manila worked with local talents during a 10-day film shoot in summer last year set in one of the barangays in Lake Sebu.
The result was a great cinematic movie for the young filmmaker who won the Special Jury Prize and Best Production Design at Cinemalaya last year.
The film unravels the story of K’na (Mara Lopez), an aspiring dreamweaver and the daughter of the village chieftain. K’na studies hard under the tutelage of her grandmother Be Lamfey (Erlinda Villalobos), but is held back by her inability to dream – but her blossoming love for the young tribesman Silaw (R.K Bagatsing) inspires K’na to carry on. But when a war between a neighboring T’boli tribe is reignited, K’na is forced to choose between her love and her tribe.
As a tribute to T’boli dreamweaver, Manlilikha ng Bayan Lang Dulay, who passed away on April 30, screenings of K’na the Dreamweaver will be held this June at the UP Film Center, Fully Booked in Bonifacio Global City, Teatrino in Greenhills, and at the CCP Dream Theater.
The film has been screened and earned great reviews at the South East Asian Film Festival in Singapore and the Filipino Film Festival in Honolulu, Hawaii.
